Microneedling Aftercare Instructions - What You Should Know

Microneedling is a powerful treatment for reducing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation — but what you do right after your treatment plays a big role in your results and how quickly you heal.

At Seneca Falls Acupuncture, we want every patient to feel confident, comfortable, and fully supported before and after treatment. Here’s your complete guide to microneedling aftercare.

What to Expect Immediately After Microneedling

Right after your session, your skin may look and feel like it has a light sunburn:

  • – Mild redness or pinkness (usually fades within 12–24 hours)
  • – Slight dryness, tightness, possible mild itching or sensitivity
  • – Possible mild swelling

These are normal, short-lived effects and a sign that your body’s natural healing response has begun.

The intensity of these symptoms depends on a person’s skin. We find that people with more sensitive skin, and/or those those who get “welts” after a mosquito bite, usually experience a bit more redness and mild swelling, particularly on the neck.

Again, it is temporary, but if you are a person with sensitive skin, it’s nice to know this in advance!

The First 24 Hours: Do’s and Don’ts

✅ Do:

  • – Apply the hyaluronic acid-based serum included in your aftercare kit to help hydrate and calm the skin.
  • – Keep your skin clean and protected.
  • – Rest, hydrate, and let your skin recover naturally.

❌ Don’t:

  • – No sweating (exercise, hot yoga, sauna, or steam rooms).
  • – No makeup for at least 24 hours.
  • – No sunscreen during the first 24 hours (your skin is too sensitive).
  • – No sun exposure — avoid outdoor activities without protection.
  • – No swimming (hot tub, pool, lake, or ocean).
  • – No skincare products that contain “actives” (retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, scrubs, or exfoliants).
  • – Avoid touching the skin and only do so with clean hands.

Days 2–7: Supporting Your Skin’s Healing

  • – You can usually return to gentle cleansing and sunscreen after 24–48 hours.
  • – Continue using hydrating, soothing products (like hyaluronic acid or a calming moisturizer).
  • – At Seneca Falls Acupuncture, every microneedling patient receives a mini skincare kit from TOMA with all-natural, non-toxic ingredients. It has everything you need for your skin, including face wash, for the first two weeks after microneedling.
  • – Continue to avoid avoid: exfoliants, active ingredients, chemical peels.
  • – Protect your skin from the sun with a physical (mineral) sunscreen once it’s safe to apply, or use physical barriers like a hat.

Days 14+: Reintroduce Your Usual Skincare

  • – After two weeks you can start using exfoliants/scrubs again

Long-Term Aftercare for Best Results

  • – Schedule your treatments about one month apart.
  • – Stay consistent with hydration, gentle skincare, and sun protection — UV exposure directly damages collagen, which is the opposite of our goal.
  • – Remember: results are cumulative. Each session builds on the last, and good aftercare helps your results last longer.

Who Should Avoid Microneedling?

Microneedling is not recommended if you are:

  • – Pregnant (though nanoneedling may be an option)
  • – Experiencing active shingles, cold sores, or open acne pustules
  • – Diagnosed with discoid lupus or certain other skin conditions
  • – Undergoing active cancer treatment or radiation
  • – Prone to keloid scarring
