Pain Management with Acupuncture in Seneca Falls
Living with pain is exhausting—physically, mentally, and emotionally. At Seneca Falls Acupuncture, we work with patients who are navigating chronic and acute pain and are looking for a natural, non-pharmaceutical approach to relief.
Many people seek acupuncture as part of their pain management plan to help reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and support the body’s healing processes.
How Acupuncture May Support Pain Relief
From a Western perspective, acupuncture is thought to influence pain through mechanisms such as:
- – Regulating the nervous system (for example, calming nerves that are over-firing, changing the way the brain experiences pain signals)
- – Improving circulation to affected areas
- – Influencing the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters
- – Reducing muscle tension
- – Reducing inflammation
Research continues to explore how these mechanisms may contribute to pain intensity, pain perception, and recovery.

What to Expect at Your Appointment:
Your first visit is typically 90 minutes and includes:
- – A detailed health history
- – Individualized treatment plan
- – Acupuncture treatment focused on your specific symptoms and goals
- – Any necessary extra modalities to help reduce pain, such as cupping, heat therapy, or brief Chinese medical massage
Follow-up appointments assess changes over time and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
Personalized Treatment, Not One-Size-Fits-All:
Pain can have multiple contributing factors, including:
- – Structural issues
- – Inflammation
- – Stress and tension patterns
- – Autoimmune conditions
- – Physical activity or occupation
- – Sleep or recovery patterns
Your treatment plan may also include lifestyle recommendations, supplement recommendations, or complementary therapies depending on your goals.
Is Acupuncture Right For Your Pain?
Every person and every pain pattern is different. Acupuncture may be a helpful option if you want to:
- – Reduce the intensity and/or frequency of chronic pain
- – Avoid or reduce medication use (in collaboration with your doctor)
- – Reduce inflammation
- – Improved mobility and function
- – Focus on a natural, holistic approach to pain management
What About Sudden, Extremely Painful Low Back Pain or Sciatica?
People often ask whether acupuncture can help sudden, severe low back pain or sciatica. In our experience, acupuncture is often more comfortable and effective once the pain is no longer in the “excruciating, acute” phase.
When pain is so intense that lying face down is difficult, chiropractic or similar care may be more appropriate in the first few days. Once the pain settles, acupuncture can be helpful for ongoing muscle tension, nerve irritation, and inflammation.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?:
The number of treatments varies depending on the condition, severity, and how long you’ve had the symptoms.
As a general guideline:
– Acute pain: often improves more quickly (3–4 visits)
– Chronic pain: starting with weekly visits for 6-8 weeks, then spacing visits out over time. Typically requires monthly maintenance treatments.
Your acupuncturist will discuss expectations and make a personalized treatment plan recommendation at your first visit.
Our Approach to Collaborative Care:
Acupuncture works well in conjunction with many other types of care. Many of our patients are also managing their pain along with:

- – Rheumatologist
- – Physical therapist
- – Chiropractor
- – Mental health provider
We’re happy to collaborate with your other providers when needed. In addition, you are welcome to bring imaging reports, lab results, or referral notes to your appointment for us to better understand your unique pain situation.
