Microneedling FAQ:

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses a handheld device (a microneedling “pen”) with extremely thin needles to create tiny microchannels in the skin. This process stimulates collagen production and supports overall skin health. Many patients choose microneedling to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation.

How does microneedling work?

The tiny microchannels mentioned above are considered controlled micro-injuries, which trigger your body’s natural healing process. This promotes new collagen and elastin production, along with fresh skin cell turnover. The goal? Reduced fine lines, reduced hyperpigmentation, and a healthier, smoother, brighter complexion.

Does microneedling hurt?

We use a high-quality numbing cream to keep the treatment comfortable. Most patients report feeling only light pressure or vibration. Afterward, you may experience mild redness — similar to a sunburn — that typically fades within 12–24 hours.

How many treatments will I need?

  • – Patients Under 40: 3 treatments, spaced about a month apart
  • – Patients 40-50: 4 treatments, spaced about a month apart
  • – Patients 50-70: 4-5 treatments, about a month apart
  • – Patients over 70: 5–6 treatments are usually recommended for best results

Why is this? Cellular turnover naturally slows as we age. Microneedling helps speed up cellular turnover, increasing collagen production. But overall, the older we get, the slower the turnover, and more treatments are needed to get great results.

What results can I expect?

Microneedling helps improve skin tone and texture while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It can also reduce hyperpigmentation and scarring. It also makes your skincare products more effective — some research suggests up to 2,000% better absorption after treatment.

What should I avoid after treatment?

For the first 24 hours, we recommend avoiding:

  • – Sweating and exercise
  • – Washing your face or showering
  • – Makeup
  • – Sunscreen
  • – Direct sun exposure
  • – Swimming
  • – Skincare products with any “actives” (i.e., avoid retinol, vitamin C, fruit enzymes, etc.)
  • – Any harsh skincare products or scrubs

The goal is to avoid any bacteria on your skin in the 24 hours after treatment. It also allows your skin heal quickly and maximize your results.

Do you use PRP (platelet-rich plasma)?

We do not use PRP in our microneedling treatments at Seneca Falls Acupuncture. PRP involves drawing a patient’s blood, spinning it to isolate the plasma, and applying it during microneedling. We find that excellent results can be achieved without these extra steps.
