What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is a unique style of acupuncture on the face with the goals of reducing fine lines and wrinkles, brightening the undereye area, gently lifting and sculpting the jawline and cheeks, and giving the skin a fresh, youthful glow.

It’s a natural, noninvasive technique (i.e., nonsurgical) that uses the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine to balance the body and improve skin health and radiance.

How does cosmetic acupuncture work?

Cosmetic acupuncture works from several angles.

Insertion of tiny needles into the dermis of the skin is considered a “microtrauma” and in response, the body’s natural healing mechanism is to increase blood flow and immune cells to the area.

Along with increased blood flow comes increased oxygen and nutrients that the skin requires to heal, giving the skin a healthy glow.

An additional part of this healing process is that the body sends protein to fill in and restructure the area. This protein happens to be collagen, which can give the skin a lifted, smoother appearance.

In addition, cosmetic acupuncture includes specialized techniques for tightening the superficial muscles of the face (the mimetic muscles of expression). Tightening these muscles can lead to a lifted, more sculpted and overall younger facial appearance.

How many treatments are needed?

Like all types of acupuncture, cosmetic treatments are cumulative.  Repeated treatments are needed to create a lasting effect. The general recommendation for a series of cosmetic acupuncture treatments is two treatments per week for five or six weeks. Patients typically begin seeing subtle changes in their skin around treatment five or six.

What kind of results can I expect?

I like to describe the results from cosmetic acupuncture as gradual, soft, and subtle. As mentioned above, repeated cosmetic acupuncture treatments are needed to see an effect. Specific results and their intensity (for example, softening deep wrinkles) always depend on the patient – overall health, participation (making recommended lifestyle changes, managing stress, etc.), patient age, etc.

We always offer to take before and after photos for cosmetic acupuncture patients and that’s often when patients realize how much their fine lines have diminished or their jawline has lifted in the past five weeks. Before and after photos are optional, of course.

Are maintenance treatments recommended?

Yes. Once you’ve completed the 10-treatment series (two treatments per week for five weeks), I recommend one maintenance treatment every four to six weeks. After two years, it’s recommended to repeat the series of 10 treatments.

Ready to sign up for your series?

Exciting! We can’t wait to welcome you to the Seneca Falls Acupuncture #acupunctureglow family.

The first step before starting your cosmetic treatments is to make an appointment for a Free Cosmetic Acupuncture Consult. In this 30-minute chat, we’ll talk about your skincare goals, I’ll take a look at your skin, answer all your questions, and explain what to expect from your cosmetic acupuncture series.

What should I expect in a cosmetic acupuncture treatment?

Cosmetic acupuncture treatments are 60 minutes long. At your first treatment, we’ll discuss your skin goals and overall health. I’ll take your pulse and ask to see your tongue, part of Chinese medicine diagnosis.

You’ll relax on a comfortable, heated massage table and I’ll put in body points to balance internal systems, manage stress, regulate hormones, etc.

Then I’ll add face points for your specific concerns. After this you rest for about 25 minutes. The room is warm and quiet. Most patients nap!

Afterwards, I’ll remove all the needles and clean your face with an all-natural, alcohol-free facial toner. I’ll apply facial serum and the last step is a 10-minute gua sha facial massage.

Facial gua sha is a gentle style of massage that has been used in China for skincare for centuries and is still practiced today. It enhances the results of acupuncture because is also improves circulation and brightens the face.

Then you’re done! Most patients leave feeling deeply relaxed with glowing skin.

Is there anyone who shouldn't get cosmetic acupuncture?

This is a great question. Cosmetic acupuncture is not recommended for those who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. In Chinese medicine, during pregnancy all the body’s resources should be directed towards the baby. Cosmetic acupuncture diverts some of the body’s resources and energy to the mother’s face, which is not ideal for fertility or a growing baby.

In addition, cosmetic acupuncture is not recommended for patients who experience chronic migraines or chronic high blood pressure. If you have chronic migraines or headaches and want to do cosmetic acupuncture, we would first do a series of general acupuncture treatments to get the migraines under control, before beginning the 10-treatment cosmetic series.

Are there lifestyle changes that will enhance my cosmetic results?

Yes, we ask patients to make small changes during their series of cosmetic acupuncture treatments. Making this effort can have a big impact on your results.

Your recommendations will depend on your overall health, individual constitution and Chinese medicine diagnosis, and current diet/lifestyle habits.

But in general, broad recommendations include:

  • •  Increasing dietary protein intake.
  • •  Increasing dietary Vitamin C intake.
  • •  Wear a non-toxic sunscreen.
  • •  Eat more antioxidant-rich foods to help protect collagen.
  • •  Exercise regularly to improve whole-body blood flow, including to the skin.
  • •  Get adequate sleep.
  • •  Reduce and manage stress levels.
  • •  Practice at-home gua sha facial massage.
  •

Of course, consult your doctor before making any of these changes.
